With MacOS X Mojave, Apple introduced a new OS feature called dynamic wallpapers. Based on the time and sun positions, the system would choose a fitting wallpaper dynamically. Unfortunately, Apple itself only provided two such wallpapers, and while there was no official first party support from Apple, the community was quick to reverse engineer the required metadata format.

To enable everyone – not only people knowledgeable of Apple's AVFoundation libraries – to create, share and download their own dynamic wallpapers, two friends and I decided to start an online platform, where everyone could create their own wallpapers free of charge. And so DynamicWallpaper.Club was born by the end of 2018.

In the beginning, the club was evolving quickly but with a small audience. We tested several features with select beta testers and kept iterating on UX principles and the visual design. After all, we wanted to offer the best implementation of a wallpaper creator out there. Finally, in June 2019, we went public. Surpassing the feature set of most commercially available options, the community kept growing rapidly. Finally, we made Product Hunt's product of the day on June 23, 2019 – a great motivational boost for us and a confirmation that we were on the right track!

To date, the club is still the only web-based resource for dynamic wallpapers and has amassed 18,500 wallpapers, over 150,000 registered users and more than 2.6 million downloads. Furthermore, DynamicWallpaper.Club was covered by hundreds of articles, blog posts, and on- and offline media around the world.

While we continuously kept working on the club, eventually we just didn't have the time and resources to keep going like we did in the beginning. Also hosting the site became more and more costly, due to the large storage and file transfer requirements. And so, with a heavy heart, we sold the project in late 2021. But no worries: the club will continue to exist under a new owner! Happy creating!
